Cell Phones in Bermuda: SIM Cards, Roaming and Calling Codes

Most visitors I hear from want a quick answer to two questions: will my phone work in Bermuda, and what is the cheapest way to use it here. The short version is that every major US, Canadian, UK and European phone will work, the island has solid 4G and 5G coverage from both local carriers, and you have several ways to stay connected.

The right choice depends on how long you are staying, how much data you need, and whether your phone is unlocked. Below I walk you through every realistic option, including dialing codes and a few cost traps that catch travelers out.

Will Your Phone Work in Bermuda?

Bermuda has two licensed mobile carriers, Digicel Bermuda and One Communications (often called OneComm, formerly CellOne). Both run 4G LTE across the island and both now run 5G in most populated areas. Practically every modern smartphone from the US, Canada, the UK, Europe, Australia or India will register on one of these networks as soon as you turn on roaming.

What you actually need is a working roaming arrangement between your home carrier and one of the Bermuda networks. The major US carriers, AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile, all have roaming deals here, as do most UK and European operators. If your phone is more than a few years old, check that it supports GSM, UMTS or LTE bands. CDMA-only phones, like older Verizon and Sprint flip phones, will not work in Bermuda.

Before you fly, run through three quick checks. First, switch on international roaming on your line by calling your home carrier or doing it in the app. Second, confirm whether your plan includes data abroad, or whether it is pay-per-use (the latter can be brutally expensive).

Third, if you plan to use a local SIM or eSIM, make sure your phone is unlocked. A five minute conversation with your carrier before your trip is the single best way to avoid a surprise bill later.

Bermuda Phone Code and How to Dial

Bermuda's country code is +1 441. Bermuda sits inside the North American Numbering Plan, so it shares the +1 prefix with the US and Canada, but 441 is the area code that routes your call to the island. All Bermuda phone numbers are seven digits long after the 441.

Calling Bermuda from the United States or Canada: dial 1 441 followed by the seven digit local number. So a local taxi number becomes 1 441 xxx xxxx.

Calling Bermuda from the United Kingdom, Europe, India, Australia or anywhere else outside the NANP: dial your country's international access prefix (00 in most countries), then 1 441, then the seven digit number. So from the UK, that is 00 1 441 xxx xxxx.

Calling within Bermuda: just dial the seven digit local number. No 1, no 441 needed.

Calling out of Bermuda to the US, Canada or any other NANP country (Caribbean islands, Puerto Rico, etc.): dial 1, then the area code, then the local number, exactly as you would from the US.

Calling out of Bermuda to any country outside the NANP: dial 011, then the country code, then the area code and local number. For example, to call London from Bermuda, dial 011 44 20 xxxx xxxx.

When you call a Bermuda mobile number internationally, you still dial 1 441 then the seven digits, the same as any landline. There is no separate mobile prefix. And if you save a Bermuda number in your phone's contacts, save it as +1 441 xxx xxxx so it works whether you are inside Bermuda or back home.

AT&T Service in Bermuda

AT&T works fine in Bermuda. Bermuda is included in AT&T's International Day Pass region, which is the option most casual travelers use. You pay a daily fee, currently 12 dollars per day in 2026, and your phone behaves the same way it does in the US: your existing talk, text and data allowance is available, and there is no per-minute or per-message charge on covered destinations. Additional lines on the same account are around 6 dollars each per day on land.

A 24 hour Day Pass session starts the moment you make or take a call, send a text, or your phone pulls down data. Background app refresh can trigger it without you realizing, so if you do not want to use it on a given day, switch off cellular data or put the phone in airplane mode.

If you are coming to Bermuda by cruise ship, AT&T's cruise rate is higher, currently 20 dollars per day at sea. The cruise pass kicks in automatically as soon as you connect to the ship's cellular network. While you are docked in Bermuda and on the local Bermuda network, you should be on the standard Day Pass rate.

If you skip Day Pass and just use your phone abroad without any plan, AT&T's pay-per-use roaming rates are extremely high. Activate a plan before you fly.

Verizon Service in Bermuda

Verizon also works well in Bermuda. Verizon's TravelPass covers Bermuda and gives you unlimited talk, text and data for a flat daily fee of 12 dollars per day in 2026. The first 5 GB of data per day are at full LTE or 5G speed, then it slows to 3G for the rest of the 24 hour session, which is still usable for messaging and maps.

Like AT&T, Verizon's TravelPass session starts when you use your phone (call, text or data). On days you do not use it, you are not charged, and you do not need to remove TravelPass from your line between trips. Some Verizon Unlimited plans now include a small number of complimentary TravelPass days per month, so check your plan in the My Verizon app before you assume you will be billed every day.

A side note for Verizon customers on legacy CDMA-only phones: those do not work outside the US. Any phone that supports VoLTE and 5G, which means almost any phone bought in the last several years, is fine.

T-Mobile and US Cellular Service in Bermuda

T-Mobile customers usually have the easiest experience of any US carrier in Bermuda. Most T-Mobile postpaid plans include free roaming data and texting in Bermuda along with around 215 other destinations. Voice calls cost 25 cents per minute on entry level plans, and many newer plans (Go5G Plus, Magenta Max, the Experience tiers) include faster data and calling minutes baked in.

The free tier on the cheaper plans gives you slower data, perfectly usable for WhatsApp, maps and email but not for streaming. If you want faster data, T-Mobile sells International Passes that boost you to LTE or 5G speeds for a short window.

US Cellular customers should know that T-Mobile completed its acquisition of US Cellular in August 2025. For now, US Cellular plans continue as before, but the network you will roam on in Bermuda is a local Bermuda carrier in either case.

Over the coming months US Cellular customers will be migrated to T-Mobile plans, and most will gain T-Mobile's international roaming benefits in the process. If you are still on a legacy US Cellular plan, call them before you fly and ask exactly what your Bermuda roaming will cost, because the older rates can be expensive.

eSIM for Bermuda

If your phone supports eSIM, an eSIM is the easiest way to get a local data plan without going to a store or swapping a physical SIM. Most iPhones from the XS onwards, Pixels from the 3 onwards, and recent Samsung Galaxy S models support eSIM. You buy the plan online before your trip, scan a QR code, and the eSIM activates when you land.

Providers like Airalo, Holafly, Nomad and Ubigi all sell Bermuda eSIMs. Pricing in 2026 sits roughly between 10 dollars for a small 1 GB short trip plan and around 25 to 35 dollars for 5 to 10 GB over 7 to 30 days. Holafly sells unlimited data plans for Bermuda with daily pricing.

One catch: eSIMs are usually data only, meaning you can use WhatsApp, FaceTime, iMessage, email and so on, but you do not get a local Bermuda phone number. If you absolutely need a local number to give to a taxi driver or a hotel, you are better off with a physical local SIM or your home number on roaming.

The other catch: your phone must be unlocked, and you should add the eSIM before you arrive (or at least while you have working Wi-Fi).

Buying a Local Prepaid SIM Card in Bermuda

A local prepaid SIM is the cheapest way to use data and make local calls if you plan to stay more than a few days, especially if you need to call taxis, restaurants, hotels or tour operators often. The two providers are Digicel Bermuda and One Communications. Plans change frequently, so confirm at the store, but here is the current picture as I write this in 2026.

Your phone must be unlocked, and you will need to bring photo ID (your passport works) for SIM registration. SIM cards are not sold at L. F. Wade International Airport. You will need to visit a store or partner outlet in Hamilton, St. George's, Dockyard, Somerset or Hamilton Parish.

Digicel Bermuda

Digicel's main store is at 46 Cedar Avenue, Hamilton, with 24/7 customer care on +1 441 500 5600. Digicel runs Bermuda's newest 5G+ network and currently offers the Prime Ultra prepaid range with simple, generous bundles. The 1 Day Prime Ultra plan is BMD 6.50 for 2 GB of any-use data plus 2 GB per app of social data and unlimited Digicel-to-Digicel minutes.

The 7 Day Prime Ultra is BMD 36 with 6 GB any-use data and 10 GB per app social data. The 14 Day Prime Ultra is BMD 60 with 8 GB any-use plus 20 GB per app social. The 30 Day Prime Ultra Pro is BMD 100 with 30 GB any-use plus 45 GB per app social.

The Bermuda dollar is pegged 1:1 to the US dollar, so prices are effectively in USD. You can top up online or through the MyDigicel app, and Digicel has franchise outlets across the island, including All Talk Cellular at 1 King Street in St. George's (handy if you are staying in the East End).

One Communications (OneComm)

One is the older operator on the island. As of May 2025, OneComm launched Unlimited Prepaid Data Packs, which is a useful option if you stream or work remotely from your phone.

Their main store is at 18 Church Street, Hamilton, with a 24/7 kiosk at 30 Victoria Street. They also have outlets at the Dockyard Clock Tower Mall, the Money Shop on Water Street in St. George's, Heron Bay Plaza in Southampton, and Shelly Bay Plaza in Hamilton Parish. The customer care line is +1 441 700 7000.

OneComm runs 5G across the island and prices its prepaid data plans aggressively. Since the plans were restructured under regulatory guidance in 2025, both unlimited data packs and lower entry plans are now available. Check current prices at the store or on onecomm.bm.

A couple of Tips

Two warnings from years of reader emails. First, some prepaid plans auto-renew and keep charging your credit card. Cancel as soon as your trip ends. Second, both operators sometimes run heavily discounted switcher bundles for new prepaid customers, so it is worth asking what is on at the moment you walk in.

If your phone is locked to your home carrier and you want to use a local SIM, a couple of Hamilton stores can unlock most popular models. Audio Visual Electronics at 4 Washington Street in Hamilton, and Computerzone at 39 Dundonald Street, both have experience with phones from AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Rogers, Bell, Vodafone, O2 and others. Call ahead before turning up.

Renting a Cell Phone in Bermuda

If your own phone is locked, or if you simply do not want to risk using it on roaming, you can rent a working mobile phone from Bermuda Cell Rental. They charge 5 dollars per day and include unlimited local incoming and outgoing calls and texts, plus incoming international texts and calls at no extra charge.

Outgoing international calls are 60 cents a minute and outgoing international texts are 25 cents each. Voice mail, call waiting, three way calling and caller ID are all included.

They will deliver the phone to your hotel or to the airport for a one time 25 dollar delivery and pick up fee. You can reach them at +1 441 232 2355, 24 hours a day. It is a small, useful service, especially for business travelers who want a clean local number and do not want to deal with SIMs or roaming.

Wi-Fi Calling and Apps

Bermuda has good Wi-Fi at most hotels, resorts, restaurants and visitor attractions, and many public spots too. If your home phone supports Wi-Fi calling (most iPhones and modern Android phones do), you can connect to a hotel's Wi-Fi and make or take calls back home as if you were in your own country, with no roaming charges.

Verify Wi-Fi calling is enabled in your settings before you leave home, because some carriers need to switch it on from their side.

Apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime, iMessage, Messenger and Signal also work well over Wi-Fi and let you talk or video call anywhere in the world for free. For most leisure travelers this combination, free apps over hotel Wi-Fi plus a small eSIM data plan for when you are out, is more than enough.

Bermuda Public Phones

You will still see the traditional red British style telephone boxes here and there in Bermuda. They are part of the island's British heritage and worth photographing even if you never make a call. The most photogenic example is the red box at the Royal Naval Dockyard cruise port, right next to the Island Outfitters store. Local calls cost 50 cents (two quarters). Most boxes accept both US and Bermuda coins.

Honestly, the use of payphones has collapsed by more than 90 percent over the last decade everywhere in the world, and Bermuda is no exception. Many boxes have been removed and the ones that remain do not always work. Treat the red boxes as a photo opportunity and a backup, not a real communication plan.

Useful Local Phone Numbers

These short codes only work while you are physically in Bermuda.
  • 911 for police, ambulance and the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service.
  • 211 for the non-emergency police line.
  • 411 for local directory assistance.
  • 100.1 FM is the official emergency radio frequency for hurricane and severe weather updates from the Emergency Measures Organization.
  •
If you find yourself on Wi-Fi with no phone signal in an emergency, almost any modern smartphone will let you dial 911 over Wi-Fi calling as long as it is enabled.

    My Quick Recommendation

If you are visiting for less than a week, on a US carrier, and you mostly want to keep using your home number, switch on AT&T Day Pass or Verizon TravelPass, or just enjoy your existing T-Mobile international benefits. It is simple and you keep your number.

If you are staying a week or more, want plenty of data, and do not mind a different number while you are here, buy a local Digicel or OneComm prepaid SIM on day one. It is almost always cheaper than roaming.

If your phone supports eSIM and you want to be online from the second the plane lands, buy a Bermuda eSIM before you fly. It is the most modern option and removes any uncertainty about coverage.

If your phone is locked or older, rent from Bermuda Cell Rental or stay on Wi-Fi calling at your hotel.

Whichever route you pick, switch on Wi-Fi calling where you can, watch out for auto-renewing plans, and confirm everything with your home carrier before you leave.

Hello Raj, We appreciate the information you have supplied on your website regarding cell phone usage in Bermuda. Looks like we would be interested in purchasing the "$10 for 7 days" prepaid SIM from Digicel for our Apple iPhone. However, we will be staying in St George only.  Might Digicel have an office in St George? Thanks for any guidance you might be able to offer.

    Raj (bermuda-attractions.com) March 2023
Hi, Digicel has a franchise outlet 'All Talk Cellular' in St. George located at 1 King Street (next to Bank of Butterfield, Kings Square). Note that the pre-paid plans change quite frequently... the $10 plan was available when I last updated the article. You can visit their website or contact them for current plans. Also, you should have an unlocked phone for a pre-paid SIM to work.

We're uncertain about how to obtain cell phone service/access while in Bermuda. Our US based carrier (T-Mobile) does not provide service off-shore. We are staying at a cottage that does not have a local phone. We will need the ability to contact taxis, restaurants for reservations, among others. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for your help.

    Raj (bermuda-attractions.com) February 2020
You can buy a local pre-paid SIM card while in Bermuda or try to get it arranged through your hotel before you arrive. There are various plans for talk time, text and data, for example, Digicel pre-paid plan starts from $10 for 7 days (for 100 minutes talk, 100 texts and 100MB data). But be careful, some of these operators auto-renew the plans and keep charging the credit card... so you must deactivate the card as soon as your intended use is over.

Hi Raj, GREAT WEBSITE! Quick question. My husband and I are moving to Bermuda from UK. We have the Apple IPhones (5s and 4s). We are with Service Provider O2 in UK. Are we able to take them with us and get them unlocked over there and get a local Bermudian sim card put in by a local cell provider. Phones are pretty expensive to buy there so we would like to know this in advance.

If there is a cell phone you would recommend that we buy here before going over (tied in with cell provider there/same company) which would be easier to unlock and then use same cell provider in Bermuda.? Many thanks for your help in advance.

    Raj (bermuda-attractions.com) November 2017
Hi, there are couple of stores in the island that can help you unlock your O2 phone. I suggest you contact them and confirm before arriving.

    1) Audio Visual Electronics Ltd.
They can unlock phones locked with At&t, T-mobile, Verizon, Sprint, Rogers, Bell, Telus, Vodafone, Orange, O2 etc. They have two outlets in Bermuda ... a) 4 Washington Street, Hamilton (near the central bus terminal), Open Monday thru Saturday from 10 AM to 6 PM. Phone:  441-292-1354; b) 29 Mangrove Bay Road, Somerset (next to HSBC bank), Open Monday thru Saturday from 10 AM to 9 PM. Phone:  441-234-3305

    2) Computerzone
39 Dundonald St , Hamilton City. Phone: 441-295-7037

Note that Bermuda only has two local cell phone carriers (Digicel and Cellone). None of the overseas carriers directly operate in the island ... so a phone locked with an international carrier won't work here.

    Anym (February 2016)
Hi! Can you please tell me if they have pay telephones in Dockyard. Our cell phone service does not have international calling but I do have a phone card.

    Raj (bermuda-attractions.com) February 2016
Hi, Payphones are available at the dockyard, near the cruise terminal as well as several other places in the dockyard.

    Ruth (September 2012)
One more question as our vacation draws near, what is the cell phone service like in Bermuda? Verizon is our carrier and was wondering if we should count on being able to use our cell phones to call home.

    Raj (bermuda-attractions.com) September 2012
Yes, Verizon will work in Bermuda provided you have a regular connection (service). Make sure International dialing and roaming is set up before you arrive in Bermuda. You may need to call up the operator to do so. Also check out the current rates (it can be expensive... I understand there is a charge even for receiving text messages while in Bermuda).
