If you are planning a trip to Bermuda, the first thing to settle is whether you need a visa, what travel papers you must carry, and what to fill in before you land. The short version, Bermuda no longer issues a separate tourist entry visa for any country.

The longer version, depending on your nationality and how you reach the island, you may still need a multiple re-entry visa for the United States, the United Kingdom, or Canada, and almost every visitor arriving by air or private yacht must complete a free online form called the Bermuda Arrival Card.

I get a lot of reader questions on this topic, so I have rewritten this page to reflect the changes Bermuda made through the Immigration and Protection (Prohibition of Entry) Order 2025, which was further updated by a No. 2 Order on 17 July 2025. Does Bermuda Require a Visa?

For tourists and short-term business visitors, Bermuda itself does not require a separate entry visa from any country. That has been the position since March 1, 2014, when Bermuda abolished its old visa-controlled tourist visa.

What still matters is the country you transit through. Bermuda has no direct flights from Asia, Africa, or the Middle East, so almost every overseas visitor passes through the United States, the United Kingdom, or Canada. If you are not a citizen of one of those three gateway countries, you will need a valid multiple re-entry visa for whichever one you use. Bermuda Immigration calls this the MRV (Multi Re-Entry Visa).

So the practical answer to "do I need a visa for Bermuda" depends on three things, your nationality, your route to the island, and whether you are coming as a tourist or on a work permit.

Is the Bermuda Travel Authorization Still Needed?

No. The Travel Authorization was eliminated on November 14, 2022. During the pandemic, Bermuda ran a paid online Travel Authorization (the 40-dollar TA) with vaccination and test conditions attached. That entire system was scrapped. There is no longer any TA, no fee, no health uploads, and no vaccination or testing requirement to enter Bermuda.

In its place, the Bermuda Tourism Authority brought back the Bermuda Arrival Card, a free pre-arrival declaration that visitors complete online. A lot of older guides and search results still refer to a Bermuda Travel Authorization. Treat those as out of date, and do not pay any third-party website that asks for money to issue one.

Bermuda Arrival Card for US Citizens and All Other Visitors

If you are flying into Bermuda or arriving on a private yacht, you must complete the Bermuda Arrival Card before or on arrival. This applies to US citizens, Canadians, British citizens, and every other nationality. Cruise ship passengers and Bermudian residents do not need to fill it in.

The official form sits on the Government of Bermuda site at BermudaArrivalCard.com. It is free. You enter passport details, your flight or vessel information, your address in Bermuda, and dates of stay. Once you submit, you get a confirmation by email that you show on arrival at the airport.

Key things to know about the Arrival Card. It is not a visa, just a digital declaration that replaces the old paper "Pink Form" that used to be handed out on aircraft. If you forget to do it online, a hard copy Pink Form is still available at the airport, so you will not be turned back for missing it. Filling it online is just faster.

Each traveler needs their own form, including children, and a parent can submit on a child's behalf. The card is single-entry, so if you leave Bermuda and come back on a separate trip, you submit a new one. There is no government fee, ever. If a website is charging you 30 or 50 dollars to "process" your Arrival Card, you are on a third-party page, not the official one.

Bermuda Entry Requirements by Traveler Category

Citizen of the United States, United Kingdom, or Canada

You do not need a visa of any kind to enter Bermuda. You need a valid passport that covers your stay, a return or onward ticket, and the Bermuda Arrival Card if you are arriving by air or private yacht. US passport cards are not accepted for air travel into Bermuda, only the passport book is.

On closed-loop cruises that start and end at the same US port, a US passport card or a birth certificate plus government-issued photo ID is generally acceptable for US citizens, but I still recommend a passport book in case of any emergency that requires you to fly home.

If You Are a National of Another Country

You can visit Bermuda as a tourist without a Bermuda visa, but you need a valid multiple re-entry visa for the country you transit through. The conditions Bermuda Immigration checks at the gate are:

(1) Your passport must be valid for a minimum of 45 days beyond your intended date of departure from Bermuda.

(2) Your MRV (US, UK, or Canadian) must also be valid for a minimum of 45 days beyond that date.

(3) You must hold a return or onward air ticket. A one-way ticket to Bermuda will not get you past immigration.

If you are flying onward to a third country from Bermuda, you must also hold a valid visa for that country if your nationality requires one.

If You Are a Permanent Resident of the US, UK, or Canada

Your green card or PR card, together with a valid passport from your country of citizenship, is treated by Bermuda Immigration as the equivalent of an MRV. You do not need any additional Bermuda visa. Bring both documents, both must be valid for a minimum of 45 days beyond your departure from Bermuda.

Bermuda Visa for Indians with US Visa

Indian nationals are on Bermuda's current Visa Controlled Nationals List, but the practical impact for tourism is small. If you are an Indian passport holder with a valid multiple-entry US visitor visa, you can travel to Bermuda as a tourist without applying for any separate Bermuda visa.

Your US visa, valid for at least 45 days beyond your departure from Bermuda, along with your passport and a return ticket, is what Bermuda Immigration looks for.

The same logic applies if you hold a multi-entry UK Standard Visitor Visa or a multi-entry Canadian visitor visa. Use whichever you have and route through that country.

The only place where Indian nationality bites harder is if you are coming to Bermuda on a Work Permit. Then your MRV must cover the full term of the work permit plus 45 days. See the work permit section below.

The same approach applies to nationals of China, Pakistan, the Philippines (now off the list, so technically not visa-controlled, but you still need the MRV for the gateway), Sri Lanka, Nigeria, South Africa, Turkey, Egypt, Vietnam, Russia, Ukraine, and the other countries on Bermuda's current visa-controlled list.

Current Visa Controlled Nationals List (effective 17 July 2025)

Bermuda updates this list from time to time, usually to align with the UK. The Bermuda Immigration and Protection (Prohibition of Entry) (No. 2) Order 2025 took effect on 17 July 2025. Citizens of the following countries fall under the visa-controlled category and must arrive in Bermuda with a valid MRV for the US, UK, or Canada, or a Bermudian Government letter confirming they belong to Bermuda or are the spouse of a Bermudian.

Afghanistan, Albania, Algeria, Angola, Bangladesh, Belarus, Burundi, Cameroon, China (People's Republic of), Colombia, Congo, Cote d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast), Cuba, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Dominica, Egypt, El Salvador, Eritrea, Eswatini (Swaziland), Ethiopia, Gambia, Georgia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Haiti, Honduras, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Jamaica, Jordan, Kenya, North Korea, Kosovo, Lebanon, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Malawi, Moldova, Mongolia, Myanmar (Burma), Namibia, Nepal, Nigeria, North Macedonia, Pakistan, Russia, Rwanda, Senegal, Serbia, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syria, Taiwan, Tanzania, Timor-Leste, Trinidad and Tobago, Turkey, Uganda, Ukraine, Vanuatu, Venezuela, Vietnam, Yemen, Zimbabwe.

Some changes worth flagging since the January 2025 Order. Trinidad and Tobago was added. Armenia, Azerbaijan, Benin, Bhutan, Dominican Republic, Kazakhstan, Philippines, and Thailand were among the countries removed. Earlier in January 2025, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates were removed, and Colombia was added. So citizens of the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Philippines, and Thailand no longer fall under Bermuda's visa-controlled category, though they still need a valid MRV for whichever gateway country they transit through.

For nationals of Cuba, Haiti, Ukraine, and Venezuela, Bermuda allows entry without an MRV condition if they hold a standard Bermuda work permit. For everyone else on the list, the MRV requirement applies.

Bermuda Entry Requirements for Cruise Passengers, and the COVID Question

For cruise passengers calling at Bermuda, the process is simpler in two respects. First, no Bermuda Arrival Card is required, because the cruise line handles passenger manifests.

Second, there are no COVID testing or vaccination requirements anymore. Those ended along with the Travel Authorization on 14 November 2022. Any older guidance about pre-arrival negative tests, masks at the airport, or proof of vaccination is no longer applicable.

For a US citizen on a closed-loop sailing, the typical minimum is a government-issued photo ID and proof of citizenship, although a passport book is still the safer document to carry.

For non-US cruise passengers, the rule is the same as for air travel, a multiple re-entry visa for the gateway country you sail from, with the 45-day buffer beyond your departure from Bermuda. Most cruises to Bermuda originate from US ports like New York, Boston, Cape Liberty, and Norfolk, so a multi-entry US visa is what you will normally be carrying. Transiting Through the US, UK, or Canada

If you are not a citizen of the US, UK, or Canada and your itinerary takes you through one of these countries, you need a transit-permitting MRV for that gateway, even if you do not leave the airside area. Here is how the three gateways work in practice.

Through the UK as a tourist, you can apply for a Direct Airside Transit Visa (DATV) if you will stay inside the international transit zone, or a Standard Visitor Visa if you might need to clear UK immigration between connecting flights. The Standard Visitor Visa is multi-entry and is normally issued for 6 months, 2, 5, or 10 years.

Through the US, you apply for the regular B1/B2 visitor visa, which is multi-entry and normally issued for up to 10 years. The C-1 transit visa exists but is short-term and not usually suitable for repeated use.

Through Canada, you apply for a multi-entry visitor visa, or if your nationality qualifies, you may travel under the eTA. Bermuda Immigration treats the eTA as a valid travel authorization for transit purposes.

Working in Bermuda, What Changes

If you are coming to Bermuda on a job, a Bermuda work permit is mandatory in addition to whatever transit visa you need. The work permit is applied for by your Bermuda-based employer at the Department of Immigration. You do not apply for it yourself. See Working in Bermuda for the full process.

The 45-day rule is more demanding for work permit holders. Your MRV must remain valid for the entire duration of the work permit plus 45 days. If your permit is for 3 years, your MRV needs to cover 3 years and 45 days. That is why I usually advise people coming for multi-year contracts to ask for a 5 or 10 year Standard Visitor Visa for the UK, which is the easiest route for many South Asian and African nationalities.

At work permit renewal, the MRV must again be valid through the renewal period plus 45 days. Plan ahead, because missing this deadline can stall a renewal.

If you are arriving as a non-Bermudian spouse of a Bermudian, or as a dependant taking up residence, the 45-day rule on the MRV does not apply, because your stay is treated as permanent.

How Long Can You Stay?

Bermuda does not issue a tourist visa as a separate document. Permission to land is granted by an immigration officer at L.F. Wade International Airport, and the officer decides how long you may stay. The outer limit for visitors is 180 cumulative days in any rolling 12-month period.

This is a change from the older "calendar year" rule and came into effect in January 2024. Visitors who have already used their 180 days within the preceding 12 months are expected to depart, and re-entry within the next six months can be refused.

If you need longer than the period stamped on arrival, an application to extend can be made to the Department of Immigration in Hamilton before your current permission expires. Supporting documents (proof of funds, accommodation, travel insurance, onward booking) are normally required, and approval is not automatic.

Anyone planning to stay close to the 180-day ceiling, or to return frequently within the same 12 months, should track their cumulative days carefully.

Business visitors are a separate category. Under the Work Permit Policy 2025, which took effect on 1 November 2025, the maximum stay for a business visitor is 14 consecutive days per visit, down from the earlier 21 days.

The activities permitted on a business-visitor landing are narrowly defined in the policy, covering things like board and committee meetings, conferences, short training programs, and site inspections, with no remuneration from a Bermuda-based employer.

Anything beyond that scope, or beyond 14 days, requires a work permit: typically a Periodic Work Permit (up to 30 days per visit, capped at 180 days in a 12-month period) or a Short-Term Work Permit (three to six months, not extendable).

A separate point that often catches first-time visitors: your passport must be valid for at least 45 days beyond your planned departure from Bermuda, and the same 45-day buffer applies to any Multi Re-entry Visa you need for the U.S., U.K., or Canada en route. Travelers who arrive short of that buffer are refused entry.

Practical Points Before You Land

Carry a passport book, not just a passport card, if you can. The passport book is the universally accepted travel document and the only valid air-travel document for non-US citizens.

Children of all ages need their own passport. Bermuda does not allow parents to combine children on their passport for entry.

Married women traveling under their married name but holding identification in their maiden name should carry their marriage certificate or a certified copy.

If you carry an old passport with a still-valid US visa, bring both passports. Bermuda Immigration is fine with the visa sitting in an expired passport so long as you also produce your current one.

Two simple things must be done on arrival, the Bermuda Arrival Card (now digital) if you came by air or yacht, and a customs declaration. See Bermuda Customs Duty for what you can and cannot bring in.

If a Bermuda work permit was issued to you with a "visa-controlled" condition written on it, that condition is binding regardless of any general policy you read elsewhere. The work permit document is the controlling instruction.

A Note on Accuracy

Bermuda's Visa Controlled Nationals List shifts with the UK's own list, which changes more often than the US or Canadian equivalents. I update this page when the Government of Bermuda gazettes a new Order, but for borderline cases you should always confirm directly with the Department of Immigration or the nearest British High Commission before you book non-refundable travel.

Hi Raj. Your answers on this topic have been excellent. I have a question. I am from Trinidad and Do NOT need a visa to travel to the UK. I have a job offer in Bermuda and will travel through the US to get to Bermuda. My US b1/b2 Visa will expire in 6months and my contract in Bermuda is 1 year. Will I need to have my US visa be valid for 1 year to get my work permit approved , or will they consider that I can transit out of Bermuda through the UK as a viable alternative ? Of course I can apply to have my US visa renewed in Bermuda. But I am concerned that my 6month visa expiry(US) will hamper my work permit ....looking forward to your response.

Hi, the work permit process is independently done and usually does not depend on your current visa status, because many foreigners apply for their MRV visa for the US/UK in parallel to the work permit process. The US/UK visa validity comes into play when you land in Bermuda and do your immigration. This is when the papers are checked and you need to show that your UK/US visa is valid minimum of 45 days beyond your work permit. Since you are transiting through the US while entering Bermuda, the Bermuda Immigration will likely assume that you will also return through the US. That you can always return through the UK without requiring any UK visa is something you need to reason out with them, and that should be possible. Suggest you write to Bermuda Immigration and get an official confirmation on this which can be a handy document to carry.

Hello, you will need to apply for a Multi Re-Entry Visa (MRV) for the US... it can be a visitor's visa which is issued for up to 10 years or less, however, it should be valid for a minimum of 45 days beyond the term (i.e. validity period) of your Bermuda work permit. One can apply for a US visitor's visa independently by paying the visa fee for the number of years for which it is required along with producing other standard documentation. However, if you want to justify your requirement for the visa by mentioning your job in Bermuda, then you will ideally need to produce a copy of your work permit when making the visa application. Otherwise, you can apply for a US visa simply as a visitor who should be eligible to re-enter the US multiple times over a specified period by paying the applicable fee.

Hi, Bermuda itself does not require any visa for tourists. Since your wife has a multi-entry visa for the US (which should be valid for a minimum of 45 days from the intended date of departure from Bermuda), she is okay to visit Bermuda from the US. As Canadian nationals, the rest of you do not need any entry visas for the US and therefore there is no issue in taking a cruise from the US to Bermuda. Suggest you take a confirmation on this from your cruise line as well.

Hi, UK Direct Airside Transit Visa is a short-term visa. In order to work in Bermuda, your Multi Re-Entry Visa for the UK needs to be valid through the work permit term + 45 days. So, you should apply for a Standard Visitor's Visa which can be issued for up to 10 years depending on your requirement. Instead of independently applying as a visitor, if you want to justify your requirement by citing the job in Bermuda, you should ideally produce a copy of the work permit while applying for the UK Visa.

You should apply for a visa through the UK. It has become difficult to get such visas through the USA, and Canada is further away. You need to apply for a multi-entry Standard Visitors Visa for the UK (you may reconfirm this with the nearest British Embassy or a Visa Consultant).

Note that a muti-entry visa through the UK, USA or Canada should remain valid until your work permit expires + 45 days... this is a Bermuda Immigration requirement and this will help you get back to your home country during the holidays and return to work in Bermuda. The Standard Visitors Visa for the UK can be issued for up to 10 years.

The work permit application will be made by the Bermudian company and they will send that to you once they receive it from Bermuda Immigration... so, practically you have no role to play in obtaining the work permit other than providing the information requested by the company as per the checklist.

Depending on your nationality, a multi re-entry visa (MRV) for the US, UK or Canada will be required, because unless you are a citizen of one of these three countries, you will need to pass through one of these to enter Bermuda. The same visa can be then used for getting back to your home country on vacations and re-entering Bermuda, and finally returning home for good. For example, in order to transit through the UK, you may apply for a Standard Visitor's Visa which can be issued for up to 10 years and it allows you to transit through the UK within 48 hours of landing.

Remember, your multi re-entry visa (MRV) should be valid for minimum 45 days beyond the expiration of the work permit, otherwise, you will not be allowed entry into Bermuda.

Hello, yes you are good to go as a visitor, provided you are going through Canada. There is no visit visa for Bermuda and you can not obtain a work permit while on a visit to Bermuda.

Hello, Bermuda doesn't have an Embassy or Consulate of its own. Since it's a British Overseas Territory, you need to approach the British Embassy or their agent to get the muti-entry visa through the UK. You will need return air tickets and passport valid for a minimum 45 days from the date of your departure from Bermuda.

Hi, there is no Bermuda entry visa required for tourists or business visitors. If you fly to Bermuda directly from the UK, both of you are good to go. If you fly via the US, you are okay because you have US visitor's visa, however, your wife would require a multi-entry visa for the US.

Dear Raj, I am a US citizen and have been traveling to Bermuda for many years now. I've been a member of the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club since 1993. For two years I have been providing housing for a family in Udaipur, India. The eldest son, Ankit, is like my son, and we have a very good relationship and are in contact every day. I will be in India for a month starting on November 17. I would very much like to bring Ankit to Bermuda as a tourist. I realize that many countries are very sensitive right now about illegal immigration. Ankit who is now 21, was denied a visa to visit the US, despite my assurances that he would never become an illegal immigrant. Hello, Bermuda itself doesn't require any visa for tourists. However, his best option would be to take a multiple-entry transit visa for UK (known as Direct Airside Transit Visa or DATV) and travel through London (an airport transfer is usually required from Heathrow to Gatwick). Application for US Transit visa is likely to be refused.

Hi, you do not need any additional visa for Bermuda. However since you are living in France, it would make sense to travel to Bermuda via UK in which case you (as a Turkish citizen) need UK multi-entry transit visa. If you travel via US, then it's okay.
